Waratahs U19s named to take on Rebels in Rd 1

The NSW Waratahs have named their U19’s team to face the Melbourne Rebels in Round 1 of the Super Rugby U19’s tournament which will be held this Sunday at 1:35pm AEST at Leichhardt Oval.

The U19 team features a diverse array of exciting players, all coming off their respective Shute Shield seasons looking to represent their state in the first round of the Super Rugby U19’s tournament. They will unite this Sunday following a month of training and are looking to bring fresh energy and talent to the field.

On Tuesday afternoon Eamon Doyle was named to lead the team out for their first match. Eamon spoke of the way in which the team have bonded and come together through the preseason.

“There is a huge variety in our selection with some of the boy’s playing Colts and some playing Grade”

“Since Shute Shield finished, we have been training for three weeks. It’s some of the boys' first time playing together so we are trying to forge our own bond and create a unique culture.”

Many of the players previously competed together in 2023 against the Queensland Reds in a two-match tournament, where NSW emerged victorious in both contests. They are eager to maintain their dominance they head into this national tournament.

“It’s a really good opportunity for us all looking to peruse rugby into the future, this gives us the opportunity to play across the nation and we are all looking to get picked for the Australia under 20’s squad, who go away next year. From here a lot of good things can happen.”

Looking forward to the first game this weekend, Eamon spoke of the importance of game play.

“The forwards have really been focusing on set piece and having clean plays of the ball, we have very quick backs so if we can win them the ball, they should be able to score points for us.”

“Going into the bye next week, now is our time to build momentum.”

“I think Sid Harvey at full back was the best player at Colts this year, Keep an eye on him this weekend, he is a pretty handy player, skilful, fast and a great kick.”
