With exactly one month to go, excitement is building fast for the NSW Waratahs’ showdown with the British & Irish Lions at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Saturday, 5 July.

A packed house is expected for this marquee fixture, the third of nine on the 2025 British & Lions tour and a key lead-in to their three-Test series against the Wallabies.

It’s a rare and historic opportunity for fans to witness two proud rugby sides reignite a rivalry that dates back more than 135 years.

The first game between the NSW Waratahs and Lions was on 2 June 1888 at the Sydney Cricket Ground before what was then one of the largest rugby crowds ever seen.

The Lions won that match 18-2, but it was remembered just as much for the spectacle as the scoreline with spectators, including the then-Governor of New South Wales, Lord Carrington, captivated by the thrilling six-try performance from the tourists.

That first game included, the NSW Waratahs and Lions have met 21 times, most recently in 2013 when the Lions recorded a 47-17 victory at Allianz Stadium.

Historically, the Lions have dominated the rivalry, but this fixture remains one of the highlights of any Lions tour — and this year promises to be no different.

With the game falling on a Saturday night and the Lions sharpening their form for the Test series, fans can expect a fierce contest and memorable atmosphere.

For the NSW Waratahs, off the Super Rugby Pacific season it’s a chance to stand tall at home before a passionate crowd against one of the best teams in world rugby.

NSW Waratahs Head Coach Dan McKellar is regarding the Lions clash as an opportunity for his developing side to showcase their potential.

“While the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season is over, our journey continues, and we are still working hard,” McKellar said.

“We have one final, momentous match remaining: a home clash against the British & Irish Lions at Allianz Stadium on 5 July.

“This is our chance to finish strong, to make you proud, and to show the world what the NSW Waratahs are capable of.”

With tickets selling fast and a full house at Allianz Stadium on the cards, now is the time to secure your seat and be there for a night that’s set to be truly special.
