NSW Waratahs Women’s centre Georgina Friedrichs is eager to return to action as the team prepares for their crucial Round 5 Super Rugby Women’s clash against the ACT Brumbies at GIO Stadium in Canberra this Friday.

NSW Waratahs Women’s Head Coach Mike Ruthven has named Friedrichs as one of two Vice Captains in a strong side along with flanker Emily Chancellor.

Captained by No. 8 Piper Duck, the side also features flyhalf Arabella McKenzie who will achieve a milestone 25th Cap for the NSW Waratahs Women.

In the aftermath of a Round 4 bye in which the NSW Waratahs played (and beat) Penina Pasifika in a ‘development game’ for players in need of game time, Friedrichs believes the break was ideal for leading towards the finals.

“We had five pre-season games followed by three round matches leading up to the break,” Friedrichs said.

“It was a great opportunity to give some of the girls a rest and provide valuable game time to others.”

Irrespective of the ACT Brumbies result, the top-of-the-table NSW Waratahs Women, who are the defending title holders, are assured of a home semi-final.

But off a bye, Friedrichs emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum as the NSW Waratahs Women continue their campaign for a top finish.

“Keeping that momentum is key,” Friedrichs said.

“A break can be beneficial or disruptive, depending on the team’s form, so it was great that we had a match instead of a full week off.

“Finishing at the top gives us confidence heading into the semi-finals, along with the advantage of playing at home.”

As discussions continue about expanding the competition beyond a five-round format, Friedrichs hopes this will be the last season of such a short format.

“With only four rounds, minor errors have a huge impact,” Friedrichs said.

“Extending the competition would allow for more quality rugby, helping to grow the depth of women’s rugby in Australia.

Reflecting on their recent Round  3 win against Queensland Reds, Friedrichs acknowledged the boost it provided.

“We always have a strong rivalry with Queensland, so getting that win was a massive confidence booster after a slow start to the season,” Friedrichs said.

“It wasn’t a perfect performance, but we’re heading in the right direction.”

Friedrichs also praised the impact of Sevens players transitioning into the XVs format, particularly Charlotte Caslick.

“Charlotte and others have incredible athleticism, and I respect her decision to commit to gaining more time in the XVs game,” Friedrichs said.

“They bring excitement to the competition, which is exactly what we need.”

Looking ahead to the Brumbies clash, Friedrichs knows the opposition will be hungry for victory.

“This is a do-or-die match for them. They’ll come out strong, and we’re not taking them lightly,” Friedrichs said.

“We’re expecting a big performance from them, and we’ll be ready.”
