The NSW Waratahs Under 20s produced a try fest to defeat the NSW Pasifica by more than one hundred points at Eric Tweedale Stadium in Granville, Sydney this afternoon.
In hot conditions in the first match of a triple header between NSW Waratahs sides and the NSW Pasifica, the NSW Waratahs claimed seventeen tries to one to finish with a 109-5 scoreline.
As official hosts of the game, the NSW Waratahs Under 20s began their try-spree from the outset and led 50-0 at half-time; by which time they had scored eight tries of which five were converted.
In the second half, they continued their barrage against NSW Pasifica to pile on another nine tries and were leading 109-0 with one minute left to go.
But to their credit, NSW Pasifica never gave up despite the game being long out of reach and managed to score just before full-time.
There were many standouts for the NSW Waratahs. Many of the tries were off set piece, while others came from some flamboyant plays among the backs.
NSW Waratahs coach Shannon Fraser was understandably pleased with his charges afterwards, saying the effort they put in was commendable.
Scoring a century-plus run of points in any rugby game is not easy when fatigue in the heat sets in; but neither is defending against so much attack as the NSW Pasifica had to do, as Fraser recognised after.
“It probably doesn't speak of the game a lot, but there's a lot of there was easy tries down the edges, late in the game,” Fraser said.
“There was a good battle through the middle of the game which the boys are a little sore for; but it was a pleasing result.”
Asked what stood out from his side, Fraser said: “We found space well. We were a little impatient at times, but we had the ability to get the ball to space effortlessly. Our back three were excellent. Our back row was good too.”
Fraser gave a tilt of the lid to flyhalf Joey Fowler who scored two tries and kicked seven conversions, and likewise his brother Jonty who came on for him ten minutes into the second half and kicked five conversions.
“They are good game organisers,” Fraser said of the Fowler brothers. “Joey's come a long way with his game organization.
“It is something that's that he's worked hard on in the pre-season with the senior squad.”
Asked who else impressed, Fraser included captain Eamon Doyle who played in the second row, flanker Luca Cleverly, number eight Toby Brial, outside centre Cooper Watters, wingers Tom Hartman and Brendan Palmer, and reserve back Jay Mackenzie.
