Jake Gordon has been named Captain of the NSW Waratahs for the 2025 season.

NSW Waratahs Head Coach Dan McKellar announced the appointment in a media conference at the team's training base at Daceyville in Sydney today.

"I spent a bit of time thinking about it and had a number of good chats to Jake and other senior players, but he's a quality leader," McKellar said.

"Jake has led the NSW Waratahs really well over the last few years which at times, has been difficult.

"So this is a new chapter for the organization and a new fresh challenge. I think he deserves an opportunity to lead us forward."

Gordon, thirty-one and who joined the NSW Waratahs in 2017, has captained the side since 2021.

“It’s a great honour to be named Captain for the 2025 season,” Gordon said.

“We have a terrific group of players and coaches at the NSW Waratahs.

“We have been training really hard and can’t wait for the season to start.”

Gordon said he appreciated the faith put in his leadership, especially with the 2025 NSW Waratahs entering a new era under their new head coach in McKellar and his coaching team and staff, and a raft of new players who have joined the squad.

"It's been a bit of a roller coaster, especially over the last sort of five years as captain," Gordon said.

"It's so supportive the team and the coaching staff have backed me for another year. I'm really excited for the season to kick off. It's just around the corner"

Gordon’s re-appointment reflects his stature in NSW and Australian rugby, and especially among his teammates.

The sniping halfback has earned 102 Caps for the NSW Waratahs and 101 of them in Super Rugby.

He has also earned 29 Caps for the Wallabies who he debuted for in 2018 against Italy in Padova.

Gordon has also left a huge imprint on club rugby in NSW, having won premierships with Sydney University in the Shute Shield.

He is one of the NSW Waratahs players who rejoined the side for pre-season training last week from the Wallabies Spring tour last year.

The NSW Waratahs kick off their 2025 Super Rugby Pacific campaign on Friday 14 February with a Round 1 home clash against the Highlanders at Allianz Stadium, Moore Park, Sydney. Tickets are on sale at Ticketek
