The Australia U20s have been denied a shot at the World Rugby U20 Championship semi-finals after their final pool match against Ireland was cancelled due to heavy rain in Cape Town on Tuesday.

With the pitch at Athlone Stadium deemed unplayable prior to the scheduled 2pm SAST / 10pm AEST kick-off, both Australia and Ireland were awarded two competition points as per the tournament rules.

Australia required victory over Ireland to finish in the tournament's top four but the washout leaves them stranded in second place in their pool.

Australia U20 Head Coach Nathan Grey will now prepare his side to contest the 5th-8th bracket in their two remaining games at the tournament, with their next opponent to be determined later today.
